Why do objects of the same temperature feel cooler or warmer than one another?

That is, a bath rug feels "warm," but a tile floor feels "cold," even though both are in the same 70 degrees room.

Because heat flows naturally in the direction of decreasing temperature, and some objects conduct it better than others. Try this at home: Step onto the tile with one bare foot and onto the rug with the other. Because your feet are nearly 30 degrees warmer than what they're standing on, and the tile is a more efficient conductor, it will transfer heat away from the foot on the tile faster, making that foot cooler than the one on the rug.
