Camping for the very first time in the land of rattlesnakes?
In other words Texas!
I am going to be camping with my husband at the Pedernales State Park in Texas, but because we just reserved Today we got the primitive area camping with chemical toilets and no water. So the hike to get there is 2 miles but we will be using our bikes. I just have a few questions for all the experts out there..
1. Is it safer to travel by bicycle instead of hiking? If we're going to use only 1 backpack each how can we take enough water to last 2 days?
2. Cooking? no grilling or fire is allowed.. so a stove? ? ? ?
3. At what time should we get inside out tents and not go outside?
4. Any other helpful tips? THANK YOU
I think you should bring one bicycle, load your gear on it including several gallons of water, and walk it with you like a pack mule.
Make sure you wear bells on your shoes so that you let the snakes and other wild life know you are coming. In fact it wouldn't hurt if you guys talked a lot too, and preferably loudly. Maybe you might even bring a loud whistle.
Carry poles, maybe even long sticks you find on the trail with you. This way you can jostle the bushes and tall grass and make sure things aren't there before you walk through it.
Since you are carrying your gear on your bike, you can load up MREs (Meals ready to eat). You might find them in an army surplus store. Some taste better than others, so you might try to pick out a variety.
I would limit your exposure to the outdoors. Just because you are outdoor does not mean you should take any risks. Stay in your tent unless absolutely necessary. If you must leave, don't forget the bells and sticks.
Honestly, I couldn't resist folks. Your first couple answers were great. I think that is sound advice. Perhaps your biggest worry might be the sun, so bring sun screen and have a great time!
