What is the formula for calculating water pressure on one area?
I am trying to find out just how much pressure is being placed on a drain plug of a cooler (ice chest) when it is filled with "X" amount of water.
Water pressure or fluid pressure in general exerts pressure against all sides of the vessel into which it is confined.
For a ice chest, i am going to assume a water density of 62.4 pcf (lbs per cubic foot). Simply take the maximum depth of the water above the drain plug in feet and multiply by 62.4.
For example, if the depth above the plug is 1 foot, the pressure is 1*62.4 = 62.4 psf or 0.433 psi.
In your example, where x is the depth, and if x were measured as "inches", the density should be in consistent units or 62.4 pcf/1728 in^3 per cubic foot = 0.036111...1 lbs/cubic inch.
When x is measured in inches, the pressure at depth x would be 0.036111x with units in psi.
p = 0.036111x
p = pressure in psi
x = depth of water in inches
so if x = 12 inches, p = 0.036111*12 = 0.4333 psi.
