If I set a log on fire in a steel box will it weigh the same after u burn it?

i came up with this question along time ago and i asked my scince teacher and she said to do reacher well guys nd galls help me out if i set a log on fire in a steel box that is celd up to the point where no matter can get out but i can pump air in and out to feed the fire would the contanents of the box wiegh the same after i burned it the weight of (steel box is canceled out on the scale and the object i would use to keep all matter in are baence out)

In theory yes.

One of the basic laws of physics is that matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

Einstien showed that matter CAN be converted into energy, but that takes an atomic reaction to do that, not a fire. (In an atomic bomb a TINY percentage (far less than 1%) of the matter is actually converted into energy. Converting 1 ounce of matter into energy would yield 1.22 megatons of destructive force. This is roughly equal to 60 of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima.)

Fire is a chemical reaction, not an atomic one. Some of the matter changes state, (turns from solid wood to gaseous smoke) but no matter is converted into energy.

So, if you were somehow able to contain the fire perfectly, the results of the fire (ash, smoke, gas, etc ) would weigh the same as they did before you started the fire.

The problem would be in the containment, as you have discovered... but that is engineering and could probably be overcome somehow.... though the weight of the oxygen you pump in to keep the fire going would also have to be included in your calculations.
