What causes plastic eyeglass lenses to turn yellow?

I've had a pair for over ten years. They are plastic, hi-index. A few years ago they started to turn yellow and are now noticeably yellow. Is this caused by UV exposure? Can it be prevented?
I'm having new plastic lenses made, by Essilor, I think. Are the newer lenses less, with their newer materials and technology, less prone to yellowing? Thanks!

Yeah... this is just wear and tear of the plastic material.. constantly exposed to sun-light (and UV). Most hi-index lenses will have a multicoat - which includes a UV inhibitor, and this can go yellow over time.

As for your new lenses... if they're SINGLE VISION lenses... most companies are quite equivalent. Also, how high is your hi-index? 1.60, 1.67, 1.71, or 1.74?

1.60 = Hoya (japanese) Eyas is best.
Higher than that... they're all the same..

Lens designs now are much improved. If you have lots of $$, then go for the 'FREE-FORM' lenses... They reduce high order aberrations.. as well as reduce peripheral distortion and 'swim' effects.
